The work of Nova
Scotia artist Duncan McFarlane
Animals and Birds in charcoal
|
Duncan's early works were produced
using charcoal pencils and depicted animals and birds of North America,
some old buildings and a black and white drawing of the Bluenose 1. The
most popular animals drawn are the timber wolf and arctic wolf.
It has been said that the animals
and birds are so well drawn that you can sense the muscles and you feel as if you could run your fingers through the fur or
stroke the feathers. |

Wildlife of Nova Scotia
 |
Since 1995 Duncan has worked in prismacolour pencils and
has been a member of the Coloured Pencil Society of
America. One of the more popular prints titled "Wolf in Fall Colours"
is a beautifully detailed depiction of the animal’s connection to its
surrounding where wolf and landscape merge through colour.
Animals and birds found in Nova Scotia were
the subject of choice: wolves, foxes, deer, eagles, owls, loons, bluejays and
chickadees.

Nova Scotia Landscapes
|
In 1999 Duncan changed the subject matter to depict
landscapes of Northern Nova Scotia. Among them are drawings of two mills, now
museums operated by the Provincial Government. "Sutherland’s Steam
Mill" shown as it would have been during its days of operation and "Balmoral Grist Mill"
a unique perspective drawn from the roadway above
the structure. The depiction of the harbour of Toney River when the boats are
being converted for fishing herring has been a popular print.

Coastal panoramas
|
The 2001 releases are panoramas; one captures
the busy atmosphere of the Cape John Fishing Fleet. Also new this year is a
depiction of a calm day at low tide, revealing
a rocky shoreline at Cape John bluffs, close to the village of River John. Just
outside of Tatamagouche there is the fishing wharf at Barrachois,
whose lobster traps and boats appear in a colourful drawing.

Our Gallery prides itself in presenting the
